Personal statement

Prof Qiteng Hong is currently a Professor at the University of Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå (UoS). His research interest is on novel solutions for monitoring, protection and control of power systems dominated by renewables. He received his BEng (Hons) degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering as the Top Graduate of the Year in 2011 and his PhD in electrical engineering (fully funded by National Grid) in 2015, both from UoS.

Prof Hong has led/been involved with 50+ research and KE projects, and secured funding with a total value of £11M, among which he was the PI for 32 projects (£2.26M). He has 110 publications with 59 journal publications and 3 book chapters. He is currently leading a team of 10 researchers, with 5 PhD students, 3 RAs and 2 visiting scholars. He is also the main developer for four prototype software tools, with the LGMVP online platform being the first of its kind in the UK, attracting 12k+ visits from 50+ countries per year. He is a reviewer for 16 leading international journals, and the guest editor for 5 journal special issues – notably he is the Co-Guest Editor-in-Chief of the special issue on zero-carbon power system in International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems.

He is a Member of the University Senate, the Deputy Director for MSc degree on Electrical Power and Energy Systems, and a Member of Steering Committee of Joint MSc on Smart Grid between UoS and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He has been involved with the delivery of teaching for 5 modules at Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå, 3 modules in partner universities and 1 module in Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå’s two centres for doctoral training (CDTs).

Prof Hong received two Best Paper Awards (IEEE APAP 2019 and IET DPSP 2025) and a Gold Medal in 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2024.  He played a leading role from Å·ÃÀ¸ßÇå in the execution of the EFCC project (£9.6m), which was shortlisted for the Best Innovation Award by Scottish Renewables and the Project Award by British Renewable Energy Awards in 2018. Prof Hong was also awarded the highly prestigious IET prize in 2011 for his outstanding academic performance, and the John Moyes Lessells Scholarship by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2013, which supported his visit to Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was a Senior Visiting Scholar at Tsinghua University since 2018 in China.

Prof Hong has strong engagement with professional organisations, and has been an invited speaker for 40 prestigious international conferences or seminars, a member of 20 technical committees/working groups, and the chair or main organiser for 16 international/national prestigious events. Notably, he is a member of IEEE Working Group (WG) P2004, IEEE Task Force on cloud-based control, and was the UK Regular Member in the CIGRE WG B5.50. He was the CIGRE B5 Next Generation Networks (NGN) technical lead between 2016-2019, and led the CIGRE NGN Global Young Member Showcase in 2016 and 2018 with participants from over 25 countries.
