Personal statement

My research interest is, broadly speaking, rational use of medicines, mainly focusing on pharmacoepidemiology – particularly drug utilisation – but also comprising related areas such as health policy. Topics include drugs used in cancer and cardiovascular disease; antimicrobial stewardship; drug adherence and treatment outcomes; and electronic record linkage. While mostly applying a range of statistical methods, I am also interest in mixed-methods approaches.

Teaching

I teach content across all years of the MPharm degree course, with a focus on information gathering and interpretation; research methods; and communication skills. I also teach critical appraisal, research methods including study designs and data analysis/statistics, and other transferrable skills on the MSc Clinical Pharmacy course. Furthermore, I am actively engaged in supervising undergraduate (MPharm) as well as postgraduate taught (MSc Clin Pharm) and research (MPhil, PhD) students.

My main areas of interest are Public Health, and the intersection of medical/pharmaceutical topics and wider societal issues. In my teaching, I aim to spark interest in research among students, and strive to develop their skills holistically.

Medication use during pregnancy can have detrimental effects on the mother as well as the unborn child, which might be unknown. Studies on medicine use during pregnancy can provide valuable information about the medications that pregnant women most frequently use for the diseases they are prescribed and whether or or not using these medications could be harmful for the mother and/or the unborn child. Findings from this scoping review will provide an insight of the medicines used during pregnancy as well as a comprehensive summary of the current evidence on this topic.
