The creation and marketing of software applications for smartphones – Apps – is an already significant element of the modern digitalised and services based economy. The small size and temporally amorphous nature of such companies, twinned with little to no sector wide organising and representing organisation means that the working practices of these SMEs is concealed. This multi-disciplinary project would seek to gain insight into the three main aspects of their operations and aspects of work.

1. The development and improvement of technical, coding related skills and knowledge
2. The development and improvement of internal management/Human Resources skills and knowledge
3. The development and improvement of market facing skills and knowledge

The importance of inter-organisational networks has long been recognised. However, the inter-organisational networking practices adopted by Scottish SMEs in their internationalisation have received limited scholarly attention. In particular, there is a lack of theoretical and empirical understanding of how Scottish SMEs actually engage in the everyday practices of partnering and networking with other organisations in order to accelerate their international expansion.

This research aims to investigate the inter-organisational networking practices adopted by Scottish SMEs and their impact upon Scottish SMEs’ internationalisation into China. To this end, the research objectives are developed as:

- To investigate the availability of inter-organisational networks for Scottish SMEs in their internationalisation into China
- To examine the inter-organisational networking practices adopted by Scottish SMEs in their internationalisation into China
- To identify the influencing factors for the Scottish SMEs’ inter-organisational networking practices in the Chinese business context
- To critically evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted inter-organisational networking practices upon Scottish SMEs’ performance in their internationalisation into China
